Crucial to the Story: Snoozy the Sage

Written by: John Balser

Snoozy the Sage is a young and up and coming artist hailing from the east end of Ottawa. He spent his early years in the same neighbourhoods that birthed city greats like Keynes Woods, Hueso, and Payne. And much like these OTT legends, Snoozy has found a sound that sets him apart from the industry norm.

My eyes have been fixed on Ottawa’s multitude of amazing artists when it comes to trying to put my finger on a distinct style the city has produced. Though I haven’t quite been able to form a concise definition, I think I’m getting close…

Let’s try “gritty.” Ottawa makes music with f*cking grit. It doesn’t matter what subgenre of hip-hop you want to focus on within the city, it’s all gritty. From Lindasson’s melodic cry to Freddy Printz’ stank face-inducing bars, they all have a certain feel.

If I was to go out on a limb and make an obscure metaphor comparing it to something (which is exactly what I’m about to do), I’d relate it to your lowkey favourite restaurant. You love it for reasons that are so personal to you. There’s no $80 Steak and Frites, but you’d go here 10 times before trying some place new that everyone else is hyped over. The regulars there are weird as f*ck, but you see them as characters. It’s a part of you and it doesn’t matter if someone else doesn’t quite ‘get it’.

Snoozy the Sage is no different. The self-described antihero moves with a ‘do what I want’ swagger which pairs perfectly with his fiery passion for creating art at the highest level he can. The result is art that only makes sense as you listen to it.

A city that is so quickly classified as ‘boring’ or ‘dull’ has bred some unique artists. I can’t lie that I was any different when I first arrived in Canada’s capital city 5 years ago. However that notion has crumbled to dust as I have spent the past two years unearthing a plethora of local talent worth your time.

In high school, Snoozy excelled as a poet. The artist even went on to win poetry competitions at his school after being encouraged by his peers and teachers to recite some of the works he had been stockpiling.

He told the transition to rapping “only made sense but was difficult nonetheless” after he saw early success with his written work. Now he claims that putting the pencil to paper “leaves his mark not only on the song but the world”.

Naturally, Snoozy turned to battle rapping. His competitive nature put him at an advantage when squaring up with any who tried to take him. He rose head and shoulders above his competition leaving scorched earth l behind him after graduating.

‘I’m not the main character… I’m like Gandalf or Yoda, I’m wise and crucial to the story but not the main character,’ Snoozy said about how he sees himself.

The young Ottawa talent’s new album ‘Dreams n Reality’ will be a representation of just that. An underdog without a doubt, this new tape  will be a true testament of his artistic versatility.

Fans can expect his humble roots to run deep through the project as well as he stays true to the hero’s hero narrative, as he credits much of his creativity and drive to his love for the city that forged him. Now,  with Ottawa legend Quest signed on to produce, we can only expect something groundbreaking from this rising star’s debut project.
