July 5th, 1989. The greatest day on planet Earth, the premier of ‘Seinfeld’. 30 years later and it’s still watched worldwide and arguably the greatest sitcom of all-time (it is, just not in the mood to debate with ‘Friends’ fans). So how will the 30th anniversary of the shows launch be celebrated? By making Jerry Seinfeld’s two worlds collide, "Two of my favourite things in all the world are the comedy arts and the New York Mets”.
On July 5th the New York Mets will host ‘Seinfeld Night’ at Citi Field when the Mets play the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. Jerry will be alongside two ‘Seinfeld’ icons that played huge roles in two all-time great ‘Seinfeld’ episodes, Keith Hernandez and The Soup Nazi.
Keith Hernandez, former All-Star Met who was a part of their 1986 Championship team, appeared on the show in 1991 on an episode called “The Boyfriend”. Where Kramer and Newman accuse Keith of spitting on them after heckling him after a game (a day where the Mets happened to also be taking on the Phillies). Jerry than defends Keith Hernandez and demonstrates his ‘second-spitter’ theory which pokes fun at the physics behind the JFK shooting, comedic genius.
While Larry Thomas, otherwise known as The Soup Nazi, will also be at the game. If you’re not a Seinfeld freak and don’t know of him, well you missed out. Here are some clips.
I don’t think people are prepared for how iconic this day will be. The King of New York, a New York Met legend and The Soup Nazi all in one stadium. All three haven’t been in the same vicinity of each other since the finale of Seinfeld, this day is going to be historic.
I can assure you that this will be the only baseball game I watch this year until I catch the final few innings of a couple playoff games come October. After which I will promptly go back to watching the NFL season take dollars out of my Bet365 account.
Not only will fans attending be graced with the presence of Jerry, Keith and The Soup Nazi but the first 25,000 fans will get this brutal Seinfeld bobble head. The thing scares the shit out of me and looks nothing like him, but nevertheless I want my hands on one.
What makes this night even better is Jerry himself will host ‘Seinfeld trivia’, so fans going to the game are being encouraged to watch every episode of Seinfeld beforehand. I say they open up Citi Field the day before and have a public viewing binge of ‘Seinfeld’.
Maybe this is what the Mets are in need of to get back to the glory days, a Jerry Seinfeld and Keith Hernandez reunion.
